IP/IPR Mapping – an important first step

Intellisys surveys a company’s intangible capital and its operating environment. The result is a clear, comprehensive picture of the current situation, forming the starting point for planning next steps.

Intellisys IP mapping components include:

IP Scan

An IP situation assessment for companies. It answers three questions:

  • what intangible capital, IP, and IPR actually are;
  • what IP assets you have and what you can do with them; and
  • what you can protect, whether other IPR rights are relevant nearby, and how to proceed.

Eligible for EUIPO funding.

Patent landscape

We map the patent landscape for an industry, technology, or selected companies. Systematic analysis delivers in-depth insight into the current situation and supports your own R&D work.

A patent landscape review also reveals the competitive landscape and how it’s evolving.

Trademark clearance

Before registering a trademark, you should verify that the mark is registrable and determine which trademark classes and geographical coverage to apply for. Mapping competitors’ trademarks can also reveal valuable information about their activities and plans.

Freedom to operate

A freedom-to-operate (FTO) study shows whether the technology you use is covered by others’ patents. By regularly monitoring changes in the FTO landscape, you can quickly spot whether your core technology has become of interest to others too.

Intellisys is an authorised expert in the IPR pre-analysis service (IP Scan)

The IPR pre-analysis service is part of the European Union Intellectual Property Office’s (EUIPO) SME Fund grant programme, which helps European SMEs make the most of their intellectual property rights. In Finland, the service is coordinated by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH).

As part of the service, experts review the company’s current status and IPR situation and provide recommendations for managing intangible assets. The service does not include legal advice or the preparation of an IPR strategy.

IP/IPR Planning

After mapping the initial situation, concrete measures are planned for the efficient utilization of intangible capital.

  • Measures for the development of creative, intangible capital
  • Developing a company’s intangible capital strategy and integrating it into the business plan and other strategies
  • Planning and defining the employee invention process
  • Action plan for developing IP expertise
  • A process for collecting and working on ideas, observations, and suggestions.

Planning and drafting an IP strategy

We review the company’s creative, intangible capital and its current practices, then build an IP action plan around them – integrated into the company’s overall business plan. This includes the training, processes, and competence development needed to put it into action.

The employee inventions process

The ownership and use of employee inventions is regulated by the Employee Inventions Act. We define a process for the company to report and handle employee inventions, helping it identify new inventions (and other IP) early and transfer ownership to the company. We also prepare the instructions and forms needed to support the process.

IPR sponsor

We build the company’s understanding of how intangible assets are created, identified, protected, and put to use – and strengthen the skills of designated personnel so they can act correctly, with solid processes in place. Intellisys acts as the company’s IPR sponsor: responsible for developing competence, building understanding, and taking the right IP measures at the right time and scale.

IP/IPR Actions

Implementing plans is demanding work. Intellisys stays involved, helping you take practical, concrete action. The scope of work is agreed on a case-by-case basis and may include, for example, the following:

Innovation manager as an outsourcing service

When a company’s own time and expertise aren’t enough to carry innovation development work forward, Intellisys steps in to help with the concrete work. Together, we draw up an IP action plan and put it into action — strengthening the intangible capital behind the company’s innovations, and growing its intangible assets and value as a result.

Collecting and processing invention disclosures

Encouraging employees to innovate can be a significant driver of company growth. Managing invention disclosures from start to finish is an important part of developing innovations, and Intellisys provides the skilled, experienced expertise this requires.

Handling the patenting process

Effectively protecting an invention always requires a competent, experienced patent attorney. Finding the right one isn’t easy – Intellisys accompanies you on that search. Together with the company, we work on patent protection, weighing the real need for protection, the optimal protection methods, and the resources available.

Securing freedom to operate

If a company develops or uses technology in its operations, it needs to monitor the patent landscape to safeguard its own freedom to operate – regardless of whether the company holds patents of its own. Intellisys monitors the field on your behalf and responds if there’s any suspicion of patent infringement (for example, receiving a “cease and desist” letter).

Trademark registration

A trademark is the foundation of a company’s brand. Intellisys takes care of registering the desired mark, and provides instructions on the correct use and documentation of the mark.
Opportunity for EUIPO funding.

Domain name registration

Securing domain names for your company is essential. Intellisys handles domain name registration and the Domain Name System (DNS) services needed to maintain them.

Financial Analysis

A company’s financing is normally based on the positive cash flow generated through invoicing. Sometimes, though, external financing is needed – company expansion, a larger R&D project, an acquisition, an investment, and similar undertakings often call for it.

But what’s the right way to finance different needs? Should you seek equity investment? Hope that a public funder grants support for the project? Or could funding come from foundations instead?

These questions are mapped out with the help of the following services:

Assessment of financial needs

We examine the company’s business rationale and the financing needs behind the planned measure. We build Excel models of the different options and use the initial data to produce an estimate of how much financing is needed and when.

Funding sources for IPR Protection

Public funding is also available for IP protection. We identify the IP to be protected and examine which funding sources might suit that specific protection need.

Cash flow analysis

Positive cash flow is the lifeblood of a business, and tracking and managing it is a key tool in running one well. Intellisys builds the tools and processes you need to track cash flow now and into the future. It flags alerts if the cash situation deteriorates, and always shows you where the company’s income comes from and where its expenses go.

Pricing and profitability calculations

A company’s operations and growth rely on many types of calculations: market size assessments, sales budgets, product pricing, profitability calculations, and more. These become especially important when applying for external financing. Intellisys helps get the calculations right, so the company can make a convincing case to financiers for the funding it’s requesting.

Coaching for Funding

Intellisys is also an expert in financial planning and implementation. We map, coach, and strengthen your company’s ability to manage the financial side of its intangible assets.

  • We set goals and spar with you to build your IP portfolio’s value in the eyes of financiers
  • We evaluate financing sources and instruments
  • We offer coaching concepts tailored to your needs

Financing preparation

We comprehensively map out suitable Finnish funding sources, running in-depth analyses of their requirements and relevance to the company’s needs. Together, we decide which funding to apply for and prepare the applications in cooperation.

EU funding training

We examine the potential of various EU programmes and other international funding channels for the company. We monitor which calls open and identify the ones most relevant to the company. We also add the company’s information to the key portals used to join application consortia.

EIC Accelerator training

EIC Accelerator is a funding programme of the European Innovation Council that supports European innovations through grants and equity investments. To qualify, the innovation must be a market-disrupting, deep tech-type project at TRL level 5/6. The maximum value of an EIC Accelerator project is €3.57 million, of which EIC covers 70% (€2.5 million) as a grant, with the remaining 30% (€1.07 million) financed by the company itself or from other sources. EIC can also participate in the company’s capitalisation with €1 to €10 million, alongside private investors.

Training and programmes

Take part in our EU-funded training programmes, designed to help you build stronger ownership of your intangible capital and assets, along with their IPR protection.

IP Accelerator

An intensive 8-week programme to build a clear IP strategy. It covers business, financing, intangible capital, and IP development measures, among other things, resulting in a documented IP action plan or strategy linked to the company’s business plan.

The programme includes four half-day workshops, individual homework assignments, and a total of 12 working days of support per client, along with tools, templates, and guidance on how to use them.

A 50% EU subsidy is available for participating in the programme.

IP Sense Making

IP Sense Making events give your team a clear picture of the full journey behind intangible capital and assets: how they’re created, identified, protected, and put to use, along with the IP development, financing, and IPR costs involved. A better understanding creates the basis for well-founded decisions, and for taking the right measures at the right time and scale.

Order a half-day seminar or webinar for your chosen target group.
