Juhani Talvela

Juhani Talvela has assisted numerous SMEs, associations, and individual innovators in understanding and managing creative, intangible capital, intellectual property (IP), and IPR protection. He works as an expert for the European Innovation Council (EIC), participating in the evaluation of EIC Accelerator and EIC Transition funding applications and in funding decisions.

A regular lecturer at Aalto University, Talvela also works at LUT University. Since 2020, he has served as Chairman of the Foundation for Finnish Inventions, where he developed the Idearefinery service for the foundation’s inventor clients.

Professor Timo Nyberg has worked as a researcher and teacher at Tampere University of Technology, with over 20 years of experience building Business-Academy networks. He has led the EIT Digital summer school activities and served as a reviewer and observer in EU Horizon projects and DG CONNECT positions.

PATLIB

PATLIB is a collaborative network coordinated by the European Patent Office (EPO) to provide access to patent information across Europe. The network consists of approximately 320 patent information centres, 15 of which are located in Finland.

Intellisys Oy is one of these 15 Finnish centres, offering information retrieval, advisory services, training, invention commercialisation services, economic value assessment for inventions, and IP strategy development.

Intellisys is an authorised expert for EUIPO’s IP Scan service

Intellisys is an authorised expert in the IPR pre-analysis service (IP Scan), part of the EU Intellectual Property Office’s (EUIPO) SME Fund programme, which helps European small and medium-sized enterprises make the most of their intellectual property rights.

The IP Scan voucher is one of EUIPO’s key forms of support: it reimburses 90% of the IP Scan service cost to an eligible SME. Support is applied for through EUIPO’s electronic application service. Once granted, you can choose Intellisys Oy and Juhani Talvela as your expert through PRH — and Intellisys can also help you prepare the application.

Research and development work

Intellisys conducts active research and development (R&D) to advance the Finnish innovation system, along with new, innovative solutions and services.

R&D work is also carried out through broader development projects and networks. We’re always interested in hearing about new project opportunities, both nationally and at EU level. We offer projects deep understanding and expertise in creative, intangible capital and property, as well as IPR protection. Our expertise also covers designing and implementing innovation financing from an SME perspective.

We’re happy to participate in development projects as sub-implementers, associated partners, or strategic partners.

Intellisys is an active participant in the following ongoing projects:

Location Innovation Hub  (LIH)

Intellisys participates in phase II of the Location Innovation Hub project (LIH 2.0), running from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028.

Location Innovation Hub is a location information and technology competence centre offering services to SMEs and public administration organisations. Customers receive support for business development, adopting new technologies, and finding financing opportunities. The work is coordinated by the National Land Survey of Finland’s Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI), with services delivered by a wide network of partners. More information about the project is available on the LIH website.

Intellisys is the lead beneficiary of Work Package 3 (WP3) in the project, offering SMEs:

  • Investment readiness assessments
  • Services to increase investment readiness
  • IP/IPR awareness-raising events and activities
  • Matchmaking events with investors and funding sources
  • Guidance on funding programmes (EU funding, including Horizon Europe, EIC, ERDF, and national funding sources)

Intellisys was already involved in the first LIH period (2023–2025) and continues its work in the new project period. Location Innovation Hub has received the STEP Seal quality mark awarded by the European Commission.

CONNECT-EU 

The CONNECT-EU project, which aims to develop the circular economy of aluminium, will be implemented from September 2026 to April 2028. The project will develop EU-wide innovation programmes and networks for the efficient recycling of aluminium and the needs of sustainable industrial production.

The main implementer of the project is Brunel University London (UK), and the other partners are:

In the project, Intellisys will provide IP/IPR expertise, increase competence among SMEs in the sector, and conduct surveys of circular economy operators.

The Foundation for Finnish Inventions

Intellisys is the strategic development partner of the Foundation for Finnish Inventions, responsible for the comprehensive development of the Foundation and its services. The Idearefinery service – central to the Foundation for Finnish Inventions – was conceived and designed by Intellisys Oy, with its build-out scheduled for 2022–2028.
